I am an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and Strategic Communication at Marquette University. As a part of the Diederich College of Communication, As a self-proclaimed "pracademic," my research follows two primary foci: (1) the interplay of normative rules and the use of information communication technologies (ICTs) in organizations, and (2) how entrepreneurs and small business owners interact with internal and external stakeholders in the process of organizational growth.
My research is largely constructivist-interpretive and my investigative methods lean more naturalistic. I have conducted studies that employ qualitative research methods including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and narrative analysis. As such, my research enables me to surface new meaning and understanding of organizational phenomena from the “lived experience” of those who live it day to day.
Additionally, my research is informed by over 10 years of professional experience working for two prominent automobile manufacturers. Before beginning my doctoral studies, I spent five years at Chrysler then another five years at Hyundai. Finally, I hold a B.B.A. in Marketing from Western Michigan University, an M.B.A. in Management from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Texas at Austin..
Communication Patterns in the Startup Ecosystem: My dissertation research inquired on the existence of normative communication behaviors that may promote successful entrepreneurial activity. I continue this line of research by exploring how entrepreneurs communicatively construct legitimacy.
Small Business Outsourcing and Culture: I have recently started a project that explores how outsourcing payroll and benefits administration affects organizational culture in small businesses.
Cyberbullying: I am working on a study that examines how K-12 school districts coordinate with their internal and external stakeholders to develop policies that effectively address cyberbullying.
